TIMELINESS ON WATER DAMAGED CARPETS

Never have the words “time is of the essence” been more applicable, when a carpet is soaked by water for whatever reason, whether it be a broken pipe, sewage back-up, acts of God (which normally aren’t covered by insurance), or vandalism.

The amount of time before permanent damage occurs depends on a number of factors.  The type of carpet, natural or synthetic, the contents of the liquid that is wetting the carpet, and the period of time from incident to beginning of restoration procedures, is critical to the ability to restore the carpet, subflooring, structure, and contents.

Synthetic carpet fibers are more forgiving than natural fibers.  Bacteria contaminated liquids will begin releasing gas almost immediately and the customer who calls three weeks after the water damage occurred will have little chance of restoring the carpet to an acceptable condition.

It is important to get to the job within three days of the initial damage.  The bacterial off-gassing fibers and contaminated liquids are noticeable within hours.  This mildew or fungus can cause permanent damage within seven to fourteen days.  Discoloration such as gold, orange, and yellow streaks will start to appear within seven to eight days.  Thorough understanding of the condition which causes this problem, whether it be fungus, mold, mildew, or pH is essential for our determining the best corrective procedures to use.
